HYBRIDIZATION & TYPES OF HYBRID ORBITALS MCQ
IIT JEE - NEET

1) The hybridization of atomic orbitals of nitrogen in NO2+, NO3-, NH4+ are:

(IIT JEE 2000)

1) sp, sp3 and sp2 respectively

2) sp, sp2 and sp3 respectively

3) sp2, sp and sp3 respectively

4) sp2, sp3 and sp respectively

Logic:

Hybridization in central atom can be determined in the following steps:

i) Write the Lewis structure to get a rough idea about the structure of molecule.

ii) Finding the number of σ-bonds:

The number of σ-bonds = number of atoms with which the central atom is directly linked to.

Note: Only we need to find the number of σ-bonds. If there is a double or triple bond, remember that it constitutes only one σ-bonds.

iii) Finding the number of lone pairs on central atom:

The number of lone pairs = (v-b-c) / 2

v = no. of valence electrons in central atom.

b = no. of bonds (including both σ & π bonds) formed by central atom.

c = charge on the molecule or ionic species.

Solution:

In halogensinity of
