I launched this website in the international year of chemistry (2011) to help novice to advanced level students who pursue this subject either seriously or as a part of their studies and at the same time to contribute to the progress of science and technology by encouraging people to learn and question, especially by participating in the discussions at forums.

Atomic radius & Periodic trends

The average distance between the center of the nucleus and the electron cloud of outermost orbit is called atomic radius. The exact position of an electron is uncertain and cannot be determined accurately. Hence we take the atomic radius as the average distance.

Elements & Compounds

What is an element?

According to modern view, in simpler terms, an element can be defined as a substance made up of atoms of same atomic number.

For example, hydrogen gas, H2 is an element since the atoms in it have the same atomic number i.e. 1.

Electrolysis

Electrolysis involves dissociation (lysis) of an electrolyte by using a direct electric current.  In this process, electrical energy is used to carryout a non-spontaneous redox chemical reaction. 

The setup used to serve this purpose is known as electrolytic cell.

Fajan's rules: 

Fajan's rules were developed based on the concept: "greater the polarization, greater is the covalent nature"

1) Smaller the cation, greater is the covalent nature. i.e., Larger the cation greater is the ionic nature.

2) Larger the anion, greater is the covalent nature. i.e., Smaller the anion greater is the ionic nature.

Quantum numbers:

Quantum numbers are  used to describe the position and energy of an electron in an atom. There are four types of quantum numbers.

Quantum number

Possible values

Significance

1. Prinicipal quantum number (n)

Denotes the size and energy of orbit.

2. Azimuthal quantum number (l)

0 to n-1

Denotes the sub-level and shapes of orbitals in that sub-level. It indicates the angular momentum of electron.

3. Magnetic quantum number (m)

-l _ _ _0_ _ _+l

Indicates the spatial orientation of orbital.

4. Spin quantum bumber (s)

+1/2 or -1/2

Denotes the spin of electron.

Love at first sight - A fancy laboratory

Every time we attempt to envision a science laboratory, the scenery that strikes our mind is full of glazy glass equipment with vividly colored liquids and the people wearing white aprons and doing some sort of mixing and shaking to be fascinated at changes that most of the times accompanying the liberation of fancy gases. 

That is actually a chemical laboratory, often used by movie makers to impress us. Most of the times, this eye soothing laboratory environment kindles curiosity and more or less intellectual inquiry about science. And all the credit goes to chemistry.

Wait! Something is wrong?

However, when it comes to the actual learning process, especially at high school level, the chemical equations written in the text books seem to be sacred mantras and vigorously agitate the tender brains of pupil. 

Now they start asking what is this mystery? 

It is observed that most of the students develop a taste of disliking towards this extremely important field of science and try to avoid as much as possible due to unhappy experiences and failures they face while learning this subject.

Hmm! I want to know. What is chemistry?   

Chemistry is the systematic study of composition, synthesis, properties of substances and the changes they undergo.

It involves interpreting, correlating, and predicting the properties and structural aspects of an enormous range of materials along with the possible interactions between them. It investigates the ways in which they interact or undergo change to form new substances. 

Chemistry is not an isolated discipline but closely related to and interwoven with other branches of scientific discipline like physics, biology, geology etc., and some times lend the physical principles from other areas of science and technology to understand the structure, characterization and properties of  substances. As is true for other sciences, mathematics is an essential tool to understand the innate nature of chemical sciences.

The etymology of the word chemistry has been much disputed and obscure. However most of it is evolved from the medieval practice of alchemy. The foundations of this fascinating subject can be found along the timeline of development of science and technology from ancient times to modern era.

So what? I want to know how to learn this subject?

Learning process, just like any other subject, involves a very simple approach. Start with the basics. Read and try to grasp as much as possible. Note down the important points. Ask your self lots of questions. Discuss with others. That is all.

Branches of Chemistry

Chemical sciences is broadly divided into following branches.

General Chemistry

This branch deals with general aspects of understanding chemical sciences and includes topics like Atomic Structure, Periodic Table, Chemical bonding etc. Mastering this part is necessary before venturing into the ocean of alchemy. One can learn the inner structure of atoms, electronic configuration; about elements and their classification; interaction of atoms with each other to form chemical attractions; intermolecular forces; writing chemical equations etc.

Physical Chemistry

An unavoidable branch that addresses the basic principles of physical science involved in chemical systems. Questions like why a chemical reaction occurs and how fast it occurs are explained here. 

Inorganic Chemistry

It deals with the chemistry of all the elements, in the periodic table, and their compounds, except that of carbon. It is a broad and complex field which overlaps with other branches of science and is growing at a rapid pace. It includes topics like main group elements, transition and inner transition elements, coordination chemistry, organometallics etc.

Organic Chemistry

 A very important area of chemical sciences that deals with the study of structure, properties: both chemical and physical, synthesis and applications of organic compounds, which always contain carbon as one of the element. This field is closely related to biological sciences and is a necessary part in their studies.

Analytical Chemistry

Another important interdisciplinary branch that deals mostly with the chemical analysis and separation techniques using electroanalytical, spectrochemical and kinetic methods. Very hot topics like chromatography come under this branch.
